Victor Hugo “Contemplations” (1856) 1:25 Unity
Beyond the horizon where browning hills tower,
The sun, that infinitely splendid flower,
Bent down to the earth at sunset, and revealed
A humble daisy, blooming at the edge of a field,
On a grey wall, crumbling among the wild oat,
White and unfurling its candid halo;
And that little flower, above the old wall,
Gazed fixedly into the endless azure,
At the great star pouring forth, immortally lit.
“And I, too, have rays!” she declared to it.
Granville, July 1836.
